Campaign To Focus On Education, Health Care And Jobs
Dec. 11, 2007
Phoenix, Ariz. - David Scanlon, a prominent West Valley attorney and school district board member, announced his candidacy for the office of State Representative in the 12th Legislative District Tuesday morning.
Scanlon, a 29-year resident of the West Valley and a U.S. Army veteran, filed papers with the Secretary of State's Office Monday afternoon, and will be actively campaigning until next November's election.
"I'm looking forward to talking about issues important to the West Valley," Scanlon said, "My priorities as a candidate and legislator will be the ones that most affect people in our community: education, jobs and working to improve health care."
Since 1989, West Valley voters have elected Scanlon to the Pendergast Elementary School District Governing Board four times, and Scanlon plans to bring his broad experience in education to the State Capitol.
"Arizona's enormous growth over the last 20 years has been a blessing in many ways, but it has put an enormous strain on our public schools," Scanlon said, "We need legislators who can work to improve public education for our children, while also helping schools deal so many new students."
Scanlon will run as a Democrat with Clean Elections funding, and hopes to reach out to Republicans and Independents during the campaign and while in office.
"It's no secret that voters are tired of 'slash-and-burn-style' politics," Scanlon said, "I'm not interested in scoring cheap political points at the expense of getting things done for Arizona. I am interested in practical solutions."
"We're going to be talking to voters about health care," Scanlon said, "We'll be talking about immigration and growth issues. We'll be talking about bringing good, high paying jobs to Arizona. These are the things that keep people up at night, and they need to be addressed and dealt with. I'm not afraid to do that."
Scanlon, 60, has lived in the West Valley since 1979, raising his family and working as a civil attorney. He served in the U.S. Army as an infantry officer, and also in the Arizona National Guard following active duty. He has held numerous administrative positions, sitting on the City of Avondale Board of Adjustment and working as Director of the Community Care Network. Scanlon and his wife Marge have been married for 37 years and have two adult children.
